Helix: Short Stories #1 "The Plague of Ilaria"

"The Plague of Ilaria"

Story Concept: The film centers around an elite soldier by the name of David (not the official name) who on the brink of losing an uphill battle with a heart disease in a hospital bed, decides to take a tantalizing offer given to him by a mysterious figure. The offer given was the removing of the disease and never having to worry about being sick for the rest of an extended life (immortality) at the price of devoting himself to the mysterious man's company's security. Being desperate to take any opportunity that would guarantee that his youngest son can grow up with a father, David takes the offer without telling his family (as the mysterious man stated that the deal must be kept secret). With David's miraculous survival, he devotes his service to the mysterious figure promising to do whatever he is asked of as his way of paying back for ensuring his life. After revealing to be an Ilaria agent, the man tells David of Ilaria's desire to cleanse the world of evil every target at a time.

This is where David's expert skills as a highly trained sniper comes in as he swiftly takes out every single personnel listed in his missions. The conflict comes in as David's morality is challenged through these missions. One mission involving the assassination of an immortal with the appearance of a little girl backfires as he decides to leave her at the very last moment when he had a clear shot (revealed to be Madam Durant). Ilaria having no tolerance for failure quickly responds in their own twisted way. As David rises in the ranks of Ilaria's most deadliest assassins, something terrible happens on his way home to his family.

Upon noticing the front door kicked in, he finds his wife and child dead on the living room floor with a blood written sign besides them reading "I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE". He quickly calls his boss (the Ilaria agent who "saved" him) telling him about the terrible situation in which the man calmly tells him "It would seem you have been compromised by the enemy. Perhaps you should of shot her while you had the chance". Enraged by this discovery, he slowly develops a deep hatred for immortals as he slowly becomes a blood thirsty killer for Ilaria's needs.

Madam Durant

Killing without question now, he eventually makes a name and image for himself in the company even being idolized and paired up with some of their highest ranked members (such as "The Scythe"). Being known to renegade immortals as "La TempĂȘte", "Oculaire de la Mort", or sometimes "The Plague", David became the center focus by Ilaria's enemies especially with his iconic black and red skull mask as an image to be feared if ever seen on the field.

In a mission where David must assassinate Madam Durant again after her location was discovered, he falls into a trap set by her and a group of renegades to capture him. After many days of being tied up with no torture of any kid, Madam Durant gets David to realize that his enemies are not what he expected as Madam Durant shows him that her people are actually the only immortals left in the world with a simple desire to keep peace and fluidity to the planet. More importantly she pulls up an intercepted hacked phone conversation for him to listen to which reveals his boss's order to kill David's family as a means to mentally break him to Ilaria's will. She also shows him of Ilaria's constantly revolving plans of wiping out the population on Earth to bend to their image. With this new found discovery, David returns to Ilaria claiming to have finally escaped being captured and tortured. He undergoes an infiltration mission to not only kill his boss, but to deliver all of Ilaria's intel, hideouts, and possible double agent identities to Madam Durant.

The Scythe and his squad
However, after being questioned by Spencer ("The Scythe") through his suspicions of him being alive, David attempts to kill him removing any obstacles in his mission. Spencer being a highly skilled assassin himself, the two undergo an intense battle to the death utilizing everything in their surroundings including Spencer's signature weapons. After quickly knocking out Spencer by a close call, he decides to leave him alive as a way to show that he is better than him as a human being. He gathers the intel he needs and sends it to Madam Durant only to be trapped by his ex boss and a hit squad of gunmen in the process. Watching the files successfully send on the monitor, he looks at his ex boss and tells him "Ilaria is finished" before throwing a miniature explosive device given to him by Madam Durant incase he didn't make it out alive resulting in the entire floor of the building being shattered to pieces in a fiery explosion. As Madam Durant gains the intel files from David, she witnesses the building explosion on a security feed. As a tear runs down her eye, she tells her fellow renegade immortals that David's sacrifice was not in vain and that this new found intel will give them the edge needed to defeat Ilaria. A post credits scene shows Madam Durant sitting in a park with her dog as a figure with a trench coat and hat sits beside her. Madam Durant speaks about Ilaria having weaknesses that are possible to exploit and that everything has an end. Silently, as the figure reaches out to pet the dog, bandages are seen wrapped around his hand. The figure then turns to her and say "Then we have a lot of work to do".

Things to Point Out:
1. David's Appearance as the Iconic Assassin & His Specialties
Given the nature of David's character during his time as an Ilaria Assassin, his outfit is most likely similar to that of Spencer's only with the addition of his iconic black and red skull mask, a black and red overcoat, and his custom built sniper rifle and pistols. There is also ideas of him having a symbol on his suit relating to his names given, but that can go either way. What makes David a threatening and fearsome character is his unrivaled marksmanship skills despite his distance from his target. There's a scene that shows David calmly killing off an enemy at over 1,000 yards with a self designed handgun during a rain storm on one of his missions. He's known in the military as "The man that never misses" and that titled record easily crossed over to Ilaria. "The Plague" (as he is popularly known as) is considered one of Ilaria's most significant fail safe assets incase anything major would ever threaten the company.

2. Timeline in Helix Canon
Here's where it gets a little tricky in terms of timeline and canon, but this can easily be inserted. Given the nature of Helix's immortality concept, David's character can enter in at any given time that would make sense with Madam Durant and Spencer's stories. She simply does not mention this to Julia as Julia's mission to meet Michael is the bigger priority. Also Julia doesn't necessary have to be told by Ilaria as they do not respect her as one of them completely so certain things are on a "need to know" basis. David has became a legend, but one that is not passed around to everyone like a campfire story. Only those directly involved with the incident as well as high ranked Ilaira members know about him.
